Malpa village, located almost Fifty km not here from Dharchula in Pithoragarh district became a name synonymous with disaster while on August Eighteen One Thousand Nine Hundred Ninety-Eight before time in the morning, a series of massive landslides struck the region. Over Two Hundred people died in the disaster as well as a batch of Sixty Kailash Mansarovar yatris among whom was noted danseuse Protima Bedi.


Such was the climb of the ruin that search operations conducted by the Army and para-military forces to locate the missing personnel managed to yield only Twelve dead bodies after a 40-day operation. Later, teh government declared all the missing personnel as dead.


A rest house of the Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam which was earlier operational in the district for Kailash Mansarovar Yatra pilgrims was wound up with the disaster. Presently, Malpa is next to the yatra path although yatris just stop for dine and do not halt for the night here.


Life started limping back to normalcy in the borough around the essential half of the millenium. Since the place was next to the Yatra route, people again opened shops and dhabas in the borough until Monday's ruin revived the memories of One Thousand Nine Hundred Ninety-Eight once again. "It seems with the purpose of the village is cursed as it has seen deaths and destruction hence often," said OP Awasthi, a local.


Incidentally, the area had what's more been rocked with earthquakes in One Thousand Nine Hundred Seventy-Nine and 1980.


Four bodies have been well again in Malpa, with four soldiers and three civilians went missing due to a cloudburst gain the Mangta Nala region of Uttarakhand on Monday.
Kailash Mansarovar Yatra has been halted expected to the floods and landslide caused by the downpour on the route.
Two bridges were damaged in Mangti and one in Simkhola districts of Uttarakhand. A number of shops have been smashed because of the cloudburst. Search and rescue operations are underway at the moment.

On Sunday, at least Forty-Six folks died in a tragic incident in Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh, wherever more than One Hundred Fifty meters of road collapsed.
Many houses, two buses and a number of vehicles were buried in the debris.
A spokesman of the government said that Forty-Six bodies were recovered in the rescue operation the whole time the day and five injured were saved in this incident in Himachal.
