Malpa village, located almost Fifty km not here from Dharchula in Pithoragarh district became a name synonymous with disaster while on August Eighteen One Thousand Nine Hundred Ninety-Eight in the early hours in the morning, a series of massive landslides struck the region. Over Two Hundred people died in the disaster as well as a batch of Sixty Kailash Mansarovar yatris among whom was noted danseuse Protima Bedi.
Such was the scale of the disaster that seek operations conducted with the Army and para-military forces to locate the absent persons managed to yield only Twelve flat bodies after a 40-day operation. Later, teh government affirmed all the absent persons as dead.
A rest house of the Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam which was earlier operational in the theme for Kailash Mansarovar Yatra pilgrims was wound up taking into account the disaster. Presently, Malpa is scheduled the yatra path although yatris simply stop for dine and do not halt for the night here.

Two bridges were dented in Mangti and one in Simkhola districts of Uttarakhand. A number of shops have been damaged because of the cloudburst. Search and rescue operations are underway by the side of the moment.
